Wayne Rooney could make an unexpected return to football management with non-league Macclesfield, according to reports.

The former England striker has emerged as a potential replacement for current head coach Robbie Savage.

Savage is reportedly attracting interest from Forest Green Rovers, and Macclesfield have identified Rooney as a possible successor should their manager depart, according to The Sun.

The 39-year-old has been out of management since his dismissal from Plymouth Argyle on New Year’s Eve.

The potential move would represent a dramatic shift for Rooney, taking him from Championship football to the National League North, the sixth tier of English football.

Rooney’s tenure at Plymouth proved disastrous, with the club winning just five of 25 matches under his leadership.

He departed Home Park with the Pilgrims rooted to the bottom of the Championship after a difficult seven-month spell.

Despite bringing in Miron Muslic as his replacement and an improvement in results, Plymouth were unable to avoid relegation to League One.

Since his departure from Devon, Rooney has been working as a television pundit for Amazon Prime. He also recently participated in the annual Soccer Aid charity match for England.

Macclesfield currently compete in the National League North after reforming following the original Macclesfield Town’s liquidation in 2020.

The phoenix club has experienced remarkable success under Savage’s guidance.

The former Manchester United midfielder took charge last summer and has overseen an impressive campaign. His record stands at 40 victories from 51 matches in charge, building on the club’s dominant promotion from the Northern Premier League.

That previous campaign saw Macclesfield accumulate more than 100 points as they secured their return to the sixth tier. Savage’s potential departure to Forest Green Rovers would leave a significant void at the Cheshire club.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Rooney’s managerial journey began in 2020 when he took charge of DC United in Major League Soccer.

He subsequently returned to England to manage Derby County during their financial crisis, before a brief spell at Birmingham City.

His time at St Andrew’s lasted just 15 matches before he departed for Plymouth, where his struggles continued. The former striker’s managerial career has yielded mixed results across four different clubs.

A move to Macclesfield would represent a significant step down from his previous appointments, taking him from England’s second tier to non-league football for the first time in his coaching career.

As a player, Rooney won the lot at club level.

He won five Premier League titles while playing under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, while also claiming the Champions League, Europa League, Carbaao Cup and FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford.
