Tyson Fury’s cut ‘hasn’t healed properly’ in worrying message ahead of Oleksandr Usyk fight

Tyson Fury has been warned that the cut above his right eye will almost certainly reopen against Oleksandr Usyk in their heavyweight undisputed clash on May 18.

The British heavyweight boxer was forced to pull out of the original date set in February after suffering a huge cut on his right eyebrow in a sparring session.

It was originally claimed the heavyweight clash would likely be pushed back until the end of 2024, but there was surprise when May 18 was pencilled in for the rescheduled bout.

Fury ended up having 11 stitches to try and it’s still very much visible on his face with just a few weeks now until the fight is scheduled to take place.

Veteran cutwoman, Sammy Morris, notes that the cut is in the same area where he suffered two wounds against Otto Wallin in 2019.

And Morris fears that Fury will have to deal with the risk of the cut reopening in every fight he has before he retires.

“If he did that five years ago and the wound has come open again five years later in exactly the same place then it hasn’t healed properly and now it’s double wound site,” Morris told talkSPORT.

“He’s been cut and cut again in the same place. It just goes to show that after five years it hasn’t knitted back together.

“Even by coming back in after 100 days, which is the basic recommendation of when you should fight again after a cut is meant to have healed, he runs the risk of it reopening against Usyk.”

She added: “With age, your skin loses elasticity and the collagen underneath it, so it becomes much easier for you to get cut.

“Fury is 35 years old now and it is going to take him almost double the time to heal as someone that is 20 years old.

“So it will cause him problems and I personally think it will come open in his next fight.

“And as a fighter, he will be very aware of that. Hopefully, he doesn’t panic too much about it and he protects his eye because the first thing Usyk is going to want to do is come out and land a shot on that eye.

“Fury usually carries his hands low and showboats. I don’t think we’ll see any of that.

“I think he’ll have a very tight guard because he needs to protect that eye at all times.”

But Fury doesn’t appeared concerned about his cut reopening as he confidently predicted a comfortable win over Usyk in a press conference last week.

He said: “When the cruiserweights step up to the big boys, usually they get found wanting. You can beat the average big ones but you can’t beat the elite big ones, because size really matters.

“We have weight divisions for a reason and he’s going to be found wanting when he fights me on May 18. This is my time, my destiny, my era and my generation. Fact.”
