Spain, Cyprus, France and even Australia are popular options for Britons looking to start a new life abroad.

However, those looking for a more affordable move should consider some lesser-known expat destinations.


According to new research by international health insurance experts at William Russell, the most affordable places to move are fairly uncommon among British expats.

However, that doesn’t mean they should be discounted. The experts have reviewed the cost of bills, entertainment, public transport and more to give countries an expat expenditure score.

Mexico was found to be the cheapest destination, and it pairs affordable living with gorgeous beaches, history and culture.

The experts said: “Mexico is the least expensive country in terms of the cost of living, with an overall score of 0.67 out of 10.

“The North American nation has the cheapest average utility bills and the cheapest gym membership on the list at £46.06/US$61.24 and £25.21/US$33.52 respectively.”

If looking in Europe, consider Lithuania, Poland or Hungary for low bills, cheap public transport and great entertainment options.

  • Poland (2.23/10)
  • South Korea (2.28/10)
  • Hungary (2.55/10)

The experts said: “Lithuania, in the Baltic region of Europe, is second. The country has the cheapest average internet bill, at £11.64/US$15.47 per month.
