A burial crypt next to the resting place of Marilyn Monroe and Playboy founder Hugh Hefner has been bought by a tech investor for £154,000 ($195,000).
The one-space mausoleum at Pierce Brother Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles went up for auction between 28 and 30 March.
Anthony Jabin, from Beverly Hills, said: “I’ve always dreamt of being next to Marilyn Monroe for the rest of my life and I bought Hugh Hefner’s round bed and Marilyn Monroe’s bathing suit at Julien’s this weekend.”
The marker on Monroe’s grave, which had to be replaced due to damage, sold for a further £70,410 ($889,900).
Hefner bought the crypt next to that of the Hollywood actress in 1992. He is now buried there having died aged 91 in 2017.
Monroe died aged 36 in 1962 and was best known for the films Some Like It Hot (1959), The Seven Year Itch (1955), and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953).
Various other belongings of hers went up for auction at Julien’s over the weekend.
They included one of her dresses from The Seven Year Itch, a Mae West-inspired evening gown, which featured in a scene that was cut, and sold for £100,586 ($127,000).
Her Elizabeth Arden lipstick, which came in a gold-tone case, sold for £5,544 ($7,000).
Some of Hefner’s clothes, including his famous burgundy smoking jacket, slippers, pyjamas, and tobacco pipe sold for a total of £10,296 ($13,000).
Alongside his clothes, a selection of contemporary artwork that once hung in the Playboy headquarters sold for £100,586 ($127,000).
David Goodman, chief executive of Julien’s Auctions said: “Throughout our 20 years in the business, Julien’s has proudly represented the legacies of Hollywood’s biggest stars yet there is no one bigger and more enduring than Marilyn Monroe.
“Her most glamourous and incandescent items were the top sellers at our three-day auction that sold a stunning and fascinating collection of artefacts from three American icons of the 20th century, Hugh Hefner, Marilyn Monroe and Playboy.”
