Peter Andre’s wife Emily says there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to break down stigma surrounding around mental ill health.

Emily MacDonagh, who is an NHS doctor and author on mental health, said she felt “lucky” to be playing a role in supporting young people.

In an interview with her husband Pete on his GBNews show Saturday Morning Live, Emily, who is expecting the couple’s third child, said: “I feel really privileged because obviously my work as a doctor in the NHS, I have, a group of people that I can support and kind of look after. But it’s so amazing to be able to have that bigger platform, to be able to reach more people and I feel so lucky to be able to do that. And that’s exactly why I’ve written my books.

“I think working in the mental health sector as well, I see how there’s still such a need to break down the stigma around mental health. And I just think starting that with kids and helping them feel able to talk about their emotions and mental health in general can only be a good thing.”

Her interview comes in Children’s Mental Health Week – which aims to raise awareness of the need to support young people suffering from mental ill health.

Asked why she uses her maiden name in her books she told Peter’s co-host Ellie Costello: “So I get asked this all the time, and it’s quite a simple reason. It’s because when I graduated from medical school, and I became a doctor, we weren’t married. So, I became Dr. MacDonagh and then you have to register with the General Medical Council, and I’m registered in my maiden name.

“We obviously then got married. And look, female doctors do this, don’t they, they never use a married name. So we have the same family name but at work I just never changed it.”
