Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has spoken out after his side’s goalless draw with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The reigning champions went into the game knowing victory would boost their chances of winning the Premier League title for the fourth year on the trot.

But City struggled to break Arsenal’s resolve, with Guardiola’s side managing just one shot on target – despite having 72 per cent possession.

Guardiola has now provided his assessment of the match.

And the Spaniard has hailed Arsenal, dubbing them the ‘master’ of pressing as they left their rivals with a crucial point.

“Tough game. Quite similar game to the last ones, take the point and onto the next,” he said.

“They make a really good pressing. They are a master of that.

“It is what it is. In the end we tried. They have really top players in defence, defending perfectly compact.

“Low block. We tried.”

City star Bernardo Silva has also reacted to the result.

And the Portugal international admitted it was a difficult test for his side, with the reigning champions now three points adrift of Liverpool at the summit.

“It was tough because we played against a top, top team, very well-organised, very competitive, high rhythm,” he said.

“I think it could have gone both ways, to be honest.

“I thought we started better but during the game they were very good as well.

“We had more control, more possession, but they were always dangerous in set-pieces, in counters.

“It was tough to play against them, man-to-man when they were pressing high, and when they were defending low, their wingers were playing like full-backs, almost in a line of six.

“So, it’s never easy to play against teams who defend this well when high pressing and when defending deep, so connected.”

Bernardo also admitted City were not relying on their rivals dropping points as they hunt a fourth Premier League title on the trot.

“A lot can happen,” he added.

“Now we don’t depend on ourselves, we depend on Liverpool and Arsenal now because we don’t play against them again, so we need them to drop points as well as do our job and win our own games.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, has hailed his side for their defensive display.

And he also expressed a belief his side had the ‘better situations’ during the match, despite their lack of possession.

“A really competitive match as you can imagine. We made another big step today,” he told the BBC.

“They have the capacity to change formations to get you in deep in many moments.

“They are very physical but I think we coped with that very well.

“I think we had the best situations. We were really aggressive at times and getting the ball into great areas.

“The way we competed individually and as a team was phenomenal.

“Individually you have to be at your best. I think it is 2021 since they hadn’t scored a goal here at the Etihad.

“It was a really tough test for us today. We wanted to win but when you cannot win you must not lose.”
