Liverpool have officially confirmed the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million, making him the club’s most expensive player in history.
The 22-year-old German international has completed his move to Anfield after undergoing a medical on Thursday and Friday, with the deal potentially breaking the British transfer record of £115 million set by Moises Caicedo’s move to Chelsea in 2023.
The attacking midfielder has signed a five-year contract worth £200,000 per week, tying him to the Premier League champions until 2030.
The transfer fee consists of an initial £100 million plus £16 million in performance-related add-ons.

Liverpool’s previous record signing was Darwin Nunez, who joined from Benfica for £85 million in 2022.
The deal was finalised after Wirtz flew to the UK on Thursday and underwent a two-day medical at the club’s training ground.

According to reports, Liverpool negotiated a fee lower than the £127 million package that Leverkusen were initially seeking.
The £100 million guaranteed fee will be paid in instalments over several years, with the additional £16 million in bonuses linked to both individual and team success.
If all add-ons are triggered, the total fee would surpass Caicedo’s British record transfer.

“I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League,” he said.
When asked about his ambitions at Liverpool, Wirtz added: “I would like to win everything every year!
“Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”
Wirtz becomes Liverpool’s third signing of the summer, following the earlier arrival of his Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million and young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi.
