Masterchef fans were left disappointed and annoyed during tonight’s episode after the six contestants were asked to make a poached egg with hollandaise sauce.

The new group of hopefuls took part in the Basic to Brilliant challenge tonight where they had to take one simple vegetable and turn it into a whole dish.

Their second dish was to create their own brunch which consisted of at least a poached egg and homemade hollandaise sauce.

Many of the contestants admitted they had never made hollandaise sauce or a poached egg, which left some viewers baffled as to how they managed to get on the show.

Taking to their X accounts to slam the “low bar” challenge, one noted: “If you can’t poach an egg you shouldn’t be on MasterChef.”

Another added: “Imagine not having experience with hollandaise and going on MasterChef. I might as well apply for Bake Off and had never made a cake before.”

Fans thought the second challenge was too easy for the show

“Learning how to poach an egg and make a hollandaise sauce is one of the essentials one does before going into the #MasterChef kitchen,” a third stated.

“Honestly shouldn’t even bother being there if they can’t poach an egg,” one quipped before another said: “These have all the potential of being the weakest 6 so far. Poach an egg and you’re through.”

A sixth commented: “How is avo on toast with a poached egg even a challenge #Masterchef? Is it me, or is that a pretty low bar?”

However, not all viewers were left unimpressed with the challenge as one viewer exclaimed: “Okay, so some have to go but culturally, I think the task was wrong.

Abi, Tat and Max all made it through to the quarterfinals

“Surely it would have been better to have asked them to make breakfast, rather than brunch?”

Commenting on the challenge after it was done, John Torode said: “I’m surprised that not all of them knew how to poach an egg perfectly.”

Defending the contestants, Gregg Wallace added: “Shall I tell you what the issue is? Stress and Masterchef nerves. That’s what the issue is.”

This isn’t the first time in the last couple of weeks that the show has been criticised, with many claiming last week that the guest judging segment was “ridiculous”.

Tonight, Dr Saliha Mahmood-Ahmed, Thomas Frake and Nisha Parmar were returning to the show to decide who out of the final four would make it to the finale, which left fans furious.

Unfortunately for Ben, his cooking wasn’t up to scratch and was sent home, leaving Abi, Max and Tat to make it through to the quarterfinals.
