British travelers in Amsterdam, Netherlands, have been issued urgent guidance following a stabbing incident in the city’s central Dam Square.

Visitors to the Dutch capital were urged to remain vigilant and comply with any instructions from local police.

The FCDO stated: “There has been a stabbing incident in Amsterdam Central Dam Square.

“If you’re in the immediate area, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local media.”

Police have shared that five people were injured in the central Amsterdam attack.

A suspect has been arrested, however, the motive of the attack is unknown at present. There are currently no details about the condition of the injured.

The incident sparked panic among bystanders in the popular tourist destination.

One witness told Dutch paper De Telegraaf that “suddenly an icy scream could be heard”.

A local shop worker said that she suddenly heard shouting and screaming, noting that people started running in the direction of the incident.

In the wake of the attack, police are urging anyone with images of the incident to upload them as evidence.

The emergency number in the Netherlands is 112. For local police, call 0900-8844. To report a crime anonymously, contact 0800-7000.

Before going abroad, holidaymakers should always consult the FCDO’s latest guidance for their chosen destination.
