Travis Kelce has revealed he pushed Andy Reid because he was ‘fired up’ during his side’s Super Bowl win on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs retained the prestigious title with a narrow 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Kelce sparked a backlash from fans online, however, when he screamed in the face of coach Reid during the showdown.

The Chiefs were 3-0 down at the time and Kelce was livid with his coach when he was taken out of the field of play.

The quarterback, who was cheered on by pop star Taylor Swift in Las Vegas, then seemingly let his temper get the better of him.

Kelce barged into Reid, who is 65, while also screaming in his face.

He was later pulled away by a team-mate but continued to vent his fury, whacking his helmet against a bench.

Kelce eventually came back on and helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl for the second year in a row.

And the veteran has now opened up on his confrontation with his coach, admitting he allowed his emotions to come to the surface amid the heat of the battle.

“Man, I was fired up — I was fired up that we weren’t hitting on all cylinders,” he told ESPN.

“I had to give ‘Big Red’ a love tap and let him know that we were all here fighting for him no matter what.

“I just had to tell him I loved him real quick.

“I put so much trust in him and how he goes about being a head coach, as a leader — he’s one of the best leaders in the game.

“I can’t thank him enough for giving me opportunities year in, year out.

“This third one, this second one back-to-back, this one’s for him, no doubt.”

Kelce then continued to lavish praise on Reid, insisting he feels honoured to have played under such a big NFL icon.

“I’ve got the greatest coach this game has ever seen,” he confidently proclaimed.

“He’s helped me a lot with channelling that emotion, channelling that passion and I owe my entire career to that guy and being able to control how emotional I get.

“I just love him.”

Reid himself also addressed the incident.

The 65-year-old downplayed Kelce’s actions and insisted he wasn’t too fazed, despite being shocked at the time.

“He caught me off balance, I wasn’t watching. Cheap shot, but that’s all right.

“He did good. He was really coming over to go, ‘Just put me in. I’ll score. I’ll score.’

“So that’s really what it was. But I love that. It’s not the first time — so listen, I appreciate him.”

Reid continued: “The part I love is he loves to play the game, and he wants to help his team win.

“It’s not a selfish thing.

“That’s not what it is, and I understand that.

“As much as he bumps into me, I get after him. And we understand that. He just caught me off balance.”
