Temperatures are set to plummet to -1C as cold conditions redevelop this week, according to the latest weather maps.

It comes as areas in northern England and southern Scotland have provisionally recorded their wettest April on record.

Higher winds will continue into the week between high pressure to the west and low pressure to the east.

Light rain is expected to move south on Monday with the warmest weather towards the west.

By mid-week, conditions are set to turn cold and wet as low pressure moves in off the Atlantic.

Weather maps suggest that temperatures will plunge to -1C from 6am on Thursday.

Day time temperatures are not expected to exceed 16C on Monday and will continue to drop to nine degrees throughout the week.

Forecasters suggest Thursday could see showers develop more widely across Britain as pressure looks set to fall.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The latest weather maps show further slow-moving areas of showers in places on Friday.

Net Weather forecaster Nick Finnis said: “We saw some warmth earlier in the month, thanks to warm air moving up from Africa, culminating in 21.8C being reached on 13th at Writtle near Chelmsford, Essex – the warmest day of the year so far.

“However, it’s turned colder during the second half of this month, with northerly or northwesterly winds bringing cool days and some chilly nights.

“But it has, at least, turned drier as a result, despite some showers earlier this past week.”

A Met Office spokesperson said Tuesday is set to be: “Cloudy in the southeast with outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

“Largely dry elsewhere with increasing sunny spells through the day. Chilly on the east coasts with a brisk northerly wind.”

Later in the week, will see: “Western areas largely dry over the coming days with sunny spells. Sunshine and showers in eastern areas. Pleasant in the sunshine, chilly around coastal areas at times with brisk winds.”
