Team GB wins first Gold medal of Paris 2024 Olympics

Team GB has picked up its first gold medal after the eventing squad successfully defended its equestrian title.

Laura Collett, who was riding London 52, secured the gold medal, taking the total haul to six.


The 34-year-old did enough to see off the challenge from France, with Stephane Landois receiving a standing ovation as the hosts secured a silver medal.

Collett picked up the medal alongside Rosalind Canter with Lordships Graffalo and Tom McEwen with JL Dublin.

Team GB were defending the title at Chateau de Versailles after claiming victory in at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The trio ended the three-day competition with 91.30 penalties to finish a commanding 12.3 clear of France, leaving Japan trailing in third.

The first medal of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games picked up by a Briton came after Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen secured bronze medals in the women’s synchronised three-metre springboard.

A silver medal soon followed after cyclist Anna Henderson finished second in the women’s road cycling individual time trial event.

The 25-year-old finished with a time of 41 minutes, 9.83 seconds.

Kimberley Woods added to the overhaul haul, with a bronze in kayaking.

However, two more medals followed in the poll, as Adam Peaty nabbed a silver medal in the men’s 100-metre breaststroke.

Tom Daley, a five-time Olympian, was unable to repeat his 2020 heroics but still managed to secure a silver medal alongside Noah Williams in the men’s synchronised 10m platform.

Responding to Team GB’s first gold, Sir Keir Starmer said: “Out first Paris 2024 gold medal.

“Congratulations Ros, Laura and Tom, what an incredible achievement.”

The Prime Minister attended the opening ceremony, standing out from the crowd by wearing his own Team GB waterproof jacket.

Starmer said it was “amazing” to meet athletes from Team GB and that “we punch well above our weight” at the Olympics.
