A seaside village in Spain has been named one of the “most horrific” places by a British holidaymaker who likened it to an “estate” with sun.

The seaside town of Torrevieja was the subject of scathing reviews left by several tourists on Trip Advisor.

The town lies in Alicante in the south-eastern province of Spain and is a popular destination for European tourists.

Despite boasting 300 days of sun per year, one tourist was left underwhelmed after discovering the area in the rain.

Taking to TripAdvisor, the holidaymaker quipped: “I was working in Spain recently and had the misfortune to end up in Torrevieja.

“In my opinion, it is without [a] doubt the most horrific place I have ever been, like a council estate with the sun – except it was rainy on the day I had to go there.”

Another user added: “I think everybody should visit Torrevieja, it will increase their appreciation of all other places in Spain.”

A third person echoed: “Go to Torrevieja if you like your English breakfast and pizzas because that is all you will get.

“I could not find a decent Spanish restaurant anywhere. All the restaurants on the promenade are pizzerias.

“You don’t even have to know a work of Spanish to get by because everyone in Torrevieja is either English or working in the tourism industry.

“In my opinion, Torreviejo is not a true reflection of Spain, it’s more ‘like Blackpool with sunshine’ Go to Barcelona, San Sevastian or even Alicante, which is only […] 40 minutes away.”

Others chimed in with a warning about getting ripped off at some of the local restaurants in the area.

“I have eaten and drunk in restaurants and bars in places such as Barrio Alto, without a problem,” said one holidaymaker.

“Perhaps I did not realise I was being ripped off? I speak a bit of Spanish and Portuguese, so perhaps that helps.”

On the flipside, some remarks in the TripAdvisor thread painted a more pleasant picture of the Spanish town.

A traveller praised the area and urged others not to judge the destination before visiting it properly.

They wrote: “Torrevieja has a lovely promenade and a marina area with Spanish tapas bars and restaurants.

“It’s really sad that some people judge a place on a quick drive through some back streets without having the foresight to actually get out of the car and have a look around before forming an opinion.”
