Spanish police have shared aerial footage of a hammerhead shark off the coast of Gran Canaria after a popular tourist beach was closed on the island due to a sighting.

Melenara Beach in the town of Telde was busy on Saturday when several swimmers saw a roughly two-metre-long shark near the shore, according to Spanish news channel Antena 3.

Lifeguards contacted the police who then arrived and closed the beach before search teams went out on jet skis to try to locate the animal, the broadcaster said.

Salinetas Beach in Telde was also reportedly closed after a fin was spotted in the water.

Police shared two videos on Sunday which showed at least one shark in the water as the beach remained closed to tourists and swimmers.

In the first video, a fin can be seen poking out the surface of the water.

The second clip is aerial footage showing what appears to be a large hammerhead shark moving through the water.

Melenara Beach reportedly remained closed until Monday before a green flag was put up meaning it was safe for swimmers to go back in the water.
