Sophie Ellis-Bextor honoured victims of the 2015 Bataclan terror attack before performing Murder on the Dancefloor at the Paris venue during a recent gig.

130 people tragically lost their lives and more than 500 were injured back in November 13, 2015, after a coordinated attack was carried out by Isis-linked militants across Paris.

The most devastating attacks occurred at the Bataclan – where Ellis-Bextor performed this week – after terrorists opened fire on a crowd enjoying a performance by the American band Eagles of Death Metal.

Paris was one of the stops on Ellis-Bextor’s tour, where she performed at the 1,500-capacity venue and recognised the sensitivity surrounding the song’s lyrics in light of past events.

She told her fans: “It didn’t feel right to me to just waltz into a song called Murder on the Dancefloor without noting and paying tribute to the history.

“Murder on the Dancefloor is not a song with any evil in its heart. The whole intention of that song, like this venue, it’s to put joy, and music on the dancefloor.

“This is for everyone who has ever danced here at the Bataclan. This is Murder on the Dancefloor. I love you Paris.”

As the moment was posted on social media, many fans were left divided in her choice to go forward with singing the song.

Defending Ellis-Bextor, one fan commented: “What else was she meant to sing…love her but who’s buying a Sophie Ellis-Bextor ticket to hear the deep cuts.”

Another added: “It’s a weird one because she’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand the song wasn’t really appropriate for that venue.

“On the other hand it’s the only song she’s got that anyone has actually heard of.”

A third replied: “I get that it’s awkward, but it’s a music venue that booked her, what did they expect her to sing?”

However, some thought the idea should have been scrapped, with one user noting: “Wow… that’s…. Just… yeah…..”

“Really? That’s extremely distasteful,” a fifth fumed. (sic)

The 44-year-old singer is currently touring Europe, after the hit song receiving fresh attention following its use during the final scene of Saltburn.

The scene in question saw actor Barry Keoghan dance nude around a mansion, but quickly propelled the 2001 hit back into the spotlight.
