Snow is expected to lash down on Britain next week as the country is hit by an Arctic blast with freezing temperatures.

Forecasters predict that the wintry conditions could start as early as Tuesday with weather maps showing temperatures plummeting to -2C.

It comes as the UK experiences mild temperatures which could reach the mid-teens this weekend.

However, the country is being warned to brace for a chilly start to the week as snow moves south.

Jim Dale, meteorologist and social commentator for British Weather Services told GB News that more specifics on snow fall will come in due course but the latest weather maps suggest the cold conditions are “more solid” next week.

He said: “It is due to start in the far north on Tuesday, the freeze then impacts all parts of the UK by Thursday onwards.

“Snow is heading south, which looks certain for Scotland, pretty certain for large parts of the north and possibly for some parts of the south.

“Specifics will come in time but we need to get through the incoming mild spell first.”

According to WX Charts, the heaviest snow will land in Scotland, where up to 20cm will fall.

Sub-zero temperatures also look set to creep up on Britain early next week, with -6C set to hit on Thursday in parts of Scotland.

England will likely remain somewhat milder than the rest of the UK, with much of the country teetering towards freezing.

The Met Office has warned that freezing snow is a possibility in some areas.

A spokesperson said: “It can produce striking effects, as the rain drop spreads out momentarily across the surface before it freezes, encasing the surface in a layer of clear ice.

“However, it is not just these eye-catching scenes that the freezing rain can bring; the weight of the ice can sometimes be heavy enough to bring down trees and power lines, and the glaze of ice on the ground effectively turns roads and pathways into an ice rink.

“The freezing rain can also prove extremely hazardous for aircraft.”
