Scotland star Andy Robertson has defended Anthony Ralston and dubbed the defender ‘unbelievable’ after his side’s 1-1 Euro 2024 draw with Switzerland on Wednesday night.

The Tartan Army went ahead in the 13th minute through Scott McTominay, with the Manchester United star seeing his deflected effort sail into the net.

But Switzerland earned a draw through Xherdan Shaqiri, with the former Liverpool and Stoke star netting 13 minutes later.

Shaqiri took his goal brilliantly yet was gifted the ball by Ralston, who miscued a backpass.

With Scotland failing to secure all three points, and being forced to settle for just one instead, Ralston will be devastated by his error.

Yet skipper Robertson has defended the Celtic star and insisted he should be proud of his performance on the night.

“[It was] more like us, much more like us. Aggressive, on the front foot, couldn’t get off to a better start,” he said.

“We make a mistake but make no mistake about it, Tony Ralston was unbelievable after that mistake.

“Second half, he was different class.

“We had our chances but so did they. We were a lot more happy with that performance.

“We’ll take the draw and we’ve taken it into the last game and that’s all we can ask.

“We need to go again Sunday because that’s a massive game for us now.

“We can take a lot of positives from tonight but we can also tweak a little thing and improve even more and that’s a good thing.

“We need to get to beds now and recover, take tomorrow and really recover proper. Come Sunday we’ll be good to go with the backing that we’ve got.”

Another Scotland player, Billy Gilmour, has also addressed the result in Cologne.

And the midfielder has hailed his team-mates for the passion they showed as they dug deep to earn a point.

“We gave everything out there. We knew we had to bounce back after the last performance and it puts us in a good place,” he said.

“We’re a good team. We know our strengths. Tonight was more like a Scotland performance.

“Getting after the ball, passionate – everything was there.”

Rachel Corsie, the captain of the Scotland women’s team, has also had her say.

Speaking on BBC One, she expressed a belief her side deserved to win.

And she also feels the positive nature of their performance will set Scotland in good stead ahead of their final group stage match against Hungary on Sunday night.

“I thought we were the better team in the second half,” she said. “Towards the end there I thought we really went for it. A couple of balls just didn’t break for us.

“They’ll be relieved they’ve got a point on the board and now they can re-group and look forward to the last game.

“There were a lot more positives – the energy and momentum that will give us is huge.”
