Salt products recalled due to contamination with foreign materials which could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences”
Compass Minerals America Inc., a leading producer of essential minerals, has initiated a recall for specific salt products due to potential contamination with foreign materials. This revelation not only jeopardizes consumer trust but also casts doubt on the company’s commitment to safety and responsibility.
The recall, first announced on Nov. 9, affects a range of salt products, including bulk salt in one metric ton totes, 50-pound bags of special purity granulated food-grade salt and 44-pound bags of Sifto HyGrade salt.
These products were distributed across the United States to states such as Maine, Indiana and Wisconsin, as well as to Canadian customers.
The discovery of metal fragments in the food-grade salt prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to classify the recall as Class II, indicating potential temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
Class II recalls are no small matter, especially when it comes to food products. The FDA’s Class II classification means that while the risk of serious adverse health effects is low, consumers could still face temporary or reversible health problems if they continue using the contaminated salt. In a statement to Newsweek, Compass Minerals said it “initiated a voluntary recall after a customer notified our company of metal fragments found in the food-grade salt it received.”
Critics note that even as Compass Minerals emphasized its focus on sustainability and community impact, the metal fragments found in their salt products raised significant concerns about the company’s quality control measures. If these fragments were indeed found in food-grade salt, it’s a stark reminder that even the most reputable companies can stumble when it comes to ensuring the safety of their products.
The presence of metal fragments in salt is a cause for serious concern. While the FDA has not reported any injuries, the potential for injury is real.

The lot codes for the contaminated products include 3240923, 3240924, 3241011, 3241022, 3241029, and 3241102.
