Britons travelling with Ryanair today have been warned of serious delays.

The airline said this is due to European ATC staff shortages beyond its control.

The airline spoke of “delays across the network (Friday 5 July) due to repeated ATC staff shortages across Europe”.

It added: “Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 airline, on Friday (5 July) apologised to its passengers for the excessive flight delays caused by European ATC staff shortages today Friday 5 July which are affecting all European airlines.

“ATC services, which have had the benefit of no French ATC strike disruption this summer, continue to underperform (despite flight volumes being five per cent behind 2019 levels) with repeated ‘staff shortages’.

“On Friday 5 July, 15 per cent of Ryanair’s first wave departures (84 of 579 aircraft) were delayed due to ATC ‘staff shortages’.

“These repeated flight delays due to ATC mismanagement are unacceptable.

“We apologise to our passengers for these repeated ATC flight delays which are deeply regrettable but beyond Ryanair’s control.”

It shared flights have faced repeated disruptions with concerns this could continue.

This comes as Wizz Air shared an “important” update for anyone travelling to Europe this summer as there could be delays on many airlines.

It said this will be caused by “airport slot management issues” brought on by extreme weather expected over the coming months.

The airline added this is out of its control but urged them to stay up-to-date on all their flights by checking the app.

Wizz Air revealed it has had more than 30,000 extra airport slot delay minutes in the past four weeks compared to the same period last year, as a result of the disruptions.

It added it will try to minimise delays and cancellations of flights but there are more issues with air traffic control systems likely.

Customers who have booked directly with Wizz Air will get updates on schedule changes via text and email.
