Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been admitted to hospital and will miss Sunday’s Premier League match against Manchester United.

The 47-year-old was taken to hospital late Friday evening after feeling unwell for several days.

The club confirmed Howe remained in hospital overnight as medical staff continue to carry out tests.

Newcastle will face Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side at St James’ Park without their manager on the touchline.

The unexpected health concern comes at a crucial point in the Premier League season for the Magpies.

Newcastle United released a statement confirming Howe’s condition, saying: “He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.

“The club added that medical tests are “ongoing” after Howe was kept in hospital overnight.

No specific details about the nature of Howe’s illness have been disclosed.

The Newcastle boss had reportedly been feeling unwell for several days before seeking medical attention.

The statement emphasised that Howe is receiving “expert medical care” while undergoing further assessment.

Newcastle United expressed their support for Howe in their statement, saying: “Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery.”

This temporary change in the dugout comes as Newcastle face Amorim’s side in an important league fixture.

Newcastle are seventh in the Premier League as they look to go on and secure a spot in the top five, which would see them qualify for the Champions League.

It has already been an incredible season for the Magpies, who beat Liverpool in March to win the Carabao Cup.

That saw them win their first domestic trophy in 70 years, marking Howe as an immediate Geordie legend.

The battle to finish in the top-five is set to be a close race with Manchester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle all sitting from fourth to seventh with two points to separate them.

However, the Toon have two games in hand over City and Villa.
