A National Lottery winner has revealed the surprising first item he bought with his winnings after scooping a whopping £1million.

The winner, known only as Mr W, won the huge cash prize from the Cash Bolt Christmas Millionaire game.

Mr W, from Leicestershire, played the game via the National Lottery app and is one of eight million players who win each week.

Announcing what he plans to do with the cash, Mr W also announced the surprising first item he bought with the money.

The UK’s newest millionaire revealed he bought a brand new kettle with the prizemoney and outlined his plans to put the rest in a savings account for his grandchildren.

“Fantastic news for Mr W on winning this incredible prize,” Andy Carter, senior winners’ advisor at The National Lottery said.

“He can make as many celebratory cups of tea as he likes with his new kettle, and has some very lucky grandchildren with lots of savings for the future! Huge congratulations!”

The win comes just a few weeks after a Tesco delivery driver won a multi-million-pound fortune just days before Christmas.

However, Jonny Johnston from Co Fermanagh in Northern Ireland who won the £3.8million Lotto jackpot, said he intends to return to work despite the huge winnings.

It was on Christmas Eve morning that he became aware of the extent of his win after failing to realise the extent of his winnings and ignoring a message in his inbox the night before.

He said: “I was sitting on the edge of the bed on Sunday morning, trying to make sense of what I was seeing.

“I just kept staring at the numbers on my account.

“I thought maybe I had won £38,000 but then there were too many zeros.

“I passed the phone to Christina for her to check and she was in disbelief too.

“We both began to think that it was a trick, a scam even! We decided we had better call Camelot and double-check.”

The National Lottery helps to generate £30million each week for hundreds of projects across the country.
