The Met Office has issued a new amber alert rain warning, as parts of Scotland are set to be battered by heavy rainfall which could even spark landslides and cause floods.

The weather warning is in place for western Scotland and is in place for the entirety of Sunday.

The alert is in place for Highlands & Eilean Siar and Strathclyde.

Between 100-150mm of rain can be expected for the region, whilst on west-facing hills, 200mm is predicted.

The weather office have issued a “danger to life” warning, as heavy rain coupled with powerful winds could cause damage across western Scotland.

They said: “A prolonged spell of heavy rain is likely to affect this area accompanied by strong southwesterly winds. The heaviest rain will be focused on west-facing hills and here some places may see around 200 mm of rainfall, whilst more generally 100-150 mm of rain is likely.

“This significant rainfall also has the potential to trigger shallow landslides and debris flows, most likely across the south of the Highland region and Argyll.”

The Met Office said that there is a chance of power cuts due to the heavy rain.

Drivers have also been cautioned by the weather office to take care when travelling, as conditions on the road could be dangerous.

Warning of flooding, the Met Office said that “fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life” and some “homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings”.

They also said there is a “good chance some communities will be cut off by blocked roads”.

Alongside the new amber alert, the Met Office has also extended a yellow rain warning.

The warning covers a larger area, including the same two regions as the amber alert, as well as Central, Tayside & Fife.

Explaining why the alert has been updated, the Met Office said: “Warning area has been extended south and the likelihood of impacts increased. The warning has also been extended to account for residual impacts lingering into early Monday, particularly across western Highland.”

The original warning was due to end at 11.59pm on Sunday but has now been extended until 6.00am on Monday.

“A prolonged period of heavy rain this weekend is expected to lead to some flooding and travel disruption” can be expected, the Met Office said
