Manchester City have punished two fans after they mocked the death of Manchester United icon Sir Bobby Charlton.

The England legend, who was part of the side that won the 1966 World Cup, passed away on Saturday after a battle with dementia.

Manchester United confirmed the death of Charlton at 4pm, with tributes flooding in from around the world.

A video then went viral on social media after two City fans seemed to mock the football icon with cruel, callous chants as their side beat Brighton 2-1.

And City have now confirmed they have banned the guilty culprits, having vowed to take action.

The young supporters, who cannot be named due to their age, are also facing a police probe.

City identified them after using CCTV footage, with the club appalled at their behaviour.

“Manchester City can confirm that two minors have been identified in connection with the vile chanting heard at the Etihad Stadium,” a club statement read.

“The individuals in question have subsequently been suspended from attending all home or away fixtures and their details have been shared with Greater Manchester Police who are investigating the matter.

“Following the conclusion of Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing investigation, the individuals will be subject to the club’s official sanctions and bans process.”

The ban comes prior to City’s match with United on Sunday.

The reigning champions go into the match at Old Trafford as strong favourites to claim all three points.

City will step out at Old Trafford on a high after recent victories over Brighton and Young Boys.

United seem to be regaining some form, however, with the Red Devils recently clocking up victories over Brentford, Sheffield United and Copenhagen.

City beat United 6-3 last year at the Etihad Stadium.

But the Red Devils got revenge with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford back in January.

City then proceeded to beat United 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley four months ago.

Meanwhile, United paid tribute to Charlton when announcing his death on Saturday.

A club statement read: “Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.

“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.

“He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game.

“A graduate of our youth Academy, Sir Bobby played 758 games and scored 249 goals during 17 years as a Manchester United player, winning the European Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup.

“For England, he won 106 caps and scored 49 goals for England, and won the 1966 World Cup.

“Following his retirement, he went on to serve the club with distinction as a director for 39 years.
