Jeremy Clarkson has praised England captain Harry Kane for his show of leadership before England’s underwhelming 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday night.

After the final game of Group C at Euro 2024, Gareth Southgate’s men finished top ahead of Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia after the Danes and Serbs also found themselves tied at 0-0.

The stalemate has prompted furious reactions from England fans across the country, with many unhappy with the style of play on show.

Despite topping their group, England’s players and Southgate were met with jeers and boos at the final whistle on Tuesday, with some in the stadium even throwing beer cups onto the pitch.

Kane struggled in front of goal on the night but it wasn’t his skills on the pitch that earned him a pat on the back from Clarkson.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Clarkson shared a series of posts about the game, beginning simply with: “Good luck England.”

Soon after, he revealed his partner Lisa Hogan didn’t share the same passion as him, writing in a separate post: “Lisa is not interested. Annoying.”

Turning his attention to Kane following the national anthems, Clarkson praised the 30-year-old for his conduct.

“I know Harry Kane gets some stick. But he doesn’t half belt out the anthem. And for that…” Clarkson said to his eight million followers.

Clarkson’s praise sparked a rather mixed reaction from England fans in response, with some calling it “wonderful to see” while others quipped: “Maybe if he put that much effort into scoring goals.”

“It was a tough game, all of these games are going to be difficult now. We recover well, we enjoy that we’re top of the group and we look forward to the next one.

“Just that final bit of quality, final pass, finish, or cross, we didn’t quite have it there today.

“We created some half chances and we had towards the end there that we could have maybe done better. Overall, they defended well and they made it hard for us.”

After hearing the boos from the England fans in attendance, Southgate also spoke to the media about the reception.

“I’m not going to back away from it. The most important thing is the supporters stay with the team,” he said.

“I understand the narrative towards me and that’s better for the team than it being towards them.

“But it is creating an unusual environment to operate in. I’ve not seen any other team qualify and receive similar.

“I understand it, I’m not going to back away from it, but I’m very proud of the players for how they’re operating within it.”
