Britons heading to Italy have been warned that ongoing flight disruptions are likely.

This is due to a heightened alert amid ongoing volcanic activity.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: “Due to volcanic activity, local authorities have increased the alert levels for both Etna and Stromboli in the south of Italy.

“In the event of a volcanic eruption, follow the advice of local authorities.

“Airspace can be affected during eruptions. If you are travelling to or from Catania, during this period of heightened activity, check with your travel provider or with Catania airport.”

Flights to Catania airport were disrupted last week but resumed again in recent days. The FCDO has now warned they could be impacted this week.

The Government body shared more information on volcanic activity. It said: “There are several active volcanoes in southern Italy.

“National emergency planning has been updated for Vesuvius as well as the Phlegraean fields, an area that remains active and which has experienced tremors in 2024.”

Volcanos can cause disruption and chaos when they erupt, and this can happen with little warning.

The Italian Civil Protection Department said: “Active volcanoes. Finally, volcanoes having erupted over the last few years are defined as active.

“These are Etna and Stromboli that frequently erupt and represent a reduced hazard at short term due to their open conduit activity.”

Holidaymakers should consider whether their travel is safe before making a journey. They should also regularly check the status of their flight, and have the appropriate insurance.

The FCDO added: “If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance.

This comes as extreme weather in the US and the Caribbean has also impacted traveller’s flights and their safety. Hurricane Beryl continues to cause devastation and tourists have now been warned about travel to Mexico.

The FCDO warned: “In the aftermath of a hurricane, power, communications and water supplies can be disrupted. There can be risks of continued flooding and landslides.”
