Is ‘H’ from Steps really getting a statue near to where he grew up in South Wales?

Earlier this week, the singer, whose real name is Ian Watkins, shared the news of plans for an 8ft statue in Cowbridge, saying he was “absolutely bowled over” and “super proud”.

In an Instagram post, the 47-year-old star added: “It’ll be a little strange seeing myself across the street when I pop into town! If little Ian, from the Rhondda could see this, he would be blown away!”

‘H’ – one-fifth of the Brit award-winning group Steps – also hosts a weekly show on Radio Wales and sits on Cowbridge Town Council.

However, the authority has released a statement saying no planning application has been submitted.

The statue was announced by a group calling itself Cultural Cowbridge, which said it would be designed by a local artist and erected in the heart of the town, outside The Bear Hotel.

They claimed it would be unveiled at Cowbridge Pride in June, an event founded by ‘H’ two years ago.

Cultural Cowbridge announced the news on Wednesday 3 April, not on April Fool’s Day.

However, on Friday morning, comedian Joe Lycett hinted he might have been behind the announcement.

Speaking to Radio 2’s Breakfast show, he said: “There’s a game we’re going to play for the next week, there’s a lot of fake news about designed to polarise and set us apart.”

When asked if he was behind the H statue, he said he “couldn’t possibly say”.

Sky News has contacted Watkins and representatives for the star for comment.
