Hungary star Dominik Szoboszlai has fumed over the speed it took for medics to get onto the field after Barnabas Varga suffered a serious head injury in his side’s 1-0 win over Scotland at Euro 2024 on Sunday night.

The 29-year-old went down in the second half after colliding with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who was attempting to claim the ball from a corner.

There was a lengthy delay to proceedings, with medics appearing to walk towards Varga as he lay injured on the turf.

Szoboszlai was seen gesturing angrily in their direction, with the Liverpool star urging for them to hurry up.

And the Liverpool star, speaking to Magenta TV, has now vented his fury at how long it took for his team-mate to receive treatment.

“I was one of the first people there,” he said.

“I was shocked myself, I tried to put him on his side, which is actually the best thing you can do in situations like this. He couldn’t get enough air.

“I have no idea what the protocol is, whether people are not allowed to run onto the pitch if we need help, but..”

When asked if he believes the response wasn’t fast enough, the Liverpool star added: “I don’t think so.

“You could see that it’s a huge problem. Everyone was running, I was running – these things add up to seconds.

“It’s not my decision, but we have to change something about it.

“We have to do it faster, much faster. Everyone knows that seconds add up.”

Hungary boss Marco Rossi has also expressed a belief that medics were ‘late’ in getting to Varga.

“What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious,” said Rossi.

“Everybody was really worried about his condition, and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late.

“Probably they didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation.

“We can say now that Barney is not under any kind of risks.

“Probably he will be operated on in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here [points to cheek], but he’s healthy.

“Of course if we will go through the competition he will not be any more part of the team.”

Scotland boss Steve Clarke, meanwhile, was left frustrated by the failure to give his side a penalty during their defeat.

Stuart Armstrong went down in the box late on but nothing was given, while VAR didn’t even check the incident.

And Clarke feels his side were unlucky, saying at his post-match press conference: “In a European competition it might have been better to have a European referee.

“But we had European VAR.

“Maybe the referee didn’t see the challenge clearly on the pitch but what’s the purpose of VAR if they’re not going to come in on something like that. It’s a penalty.

“It’s 100 per cent a penalty. Somebody somewhere has to explain to me why that’s not a penalty.

“It’s 100 per cent and in a one-goal game, had we got that penalty, it could have been a different night.

“I’ve got other words but I’m not going to use them.”
