When Harry Kane joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham back in the summer he believed his trophy drought would finally come to an end.

Fast-forward to now, however, and the England international’s hopes of a first trophy of his impressive career are hanging in the balance.

Kane was poor as Bayern crashed to a 3-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday night, managing just 18 touches as the game passed him by.

Leverkusen, who remain unbeaten under Xabi Alonso, are now five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table after goals from Josip Stanisic, Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong.

With Bayern already out of the DFB-Pokal, there’s a sense their season is on the brink of catastrophe.

They have won the league for the past 11 years but this Leverkusen side seem to be the real deal, with Xabi Alonso working wonders at the club.

Winning the Champions League won’t be easy either. Though Bayern remain in that competition their mixed form this term means they’re certainly not favourites like previous years gone by.

As a result, pressure is mounting on Tuchel behind the scenes.

When the German took charge of Bayern following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure, he seemed the natural fit.

Yet Tuchel has upset many figures at the club and, with results worsening, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the axe fall.

If it does, then Jose Mourinho could be set for a blockbuster return to management and a stunning reunion with Kane in the process.

According to German newspaper BILD, Mourinho is interested in taking charge of Bayern should Tuchel go.

He is said to be learning German and is ‘ready’ to step in if his services are required over at the Allianz Arena.

Mourinho’s stock has fallen in recent years, with some industry insiders writing the 60-year-old off as a faded force.

But appointing the former Roma, Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Porto manager could actually be a masterstroke.

That’s because Kane was outstanding under Mourinho when they worked together in north London, even if they were unable to win a trophy together.

The England international produced a remarkable 45 goals and 18 assists in 62 matches during Mourinho’s spell in the capital.

Kane evolved from a goalscorer to a playmaker as well, becoming one of the most complete strikers in the whole of world football.

And the 30-year-old, speaking in May 2021, paid tribute to Mourinho by saying: “I think with Jose I had a great relationship with him, we got on from minute one.

“I think we understood each other, we had a similar mentality and how we saw stuff on the pitch, off the pitch and mentality in training so we kind of built that relationship.

“Again, it’s a shame we couldn’t go on to win things but I’ve been lucky enough to work with Mauricio [Pochettino] and Jose, they’re two incredible managers that’s only helped me in my career for sure.”

He added at the time: “Jose’s got so much experience in the biggest of games at the biggest of clubs and that’s what I mean by saying we had a similar mentality in that aspect in doing anything to win.

“And that’s the game. Jose just wanted to win.

“That was the mentality he was trying to put into the players at Spurs, do anything to win and I think like you said we did become more streetwise, but maybe there were relationships that didn’t quite work there but from my point of view, he was great for me.”

Bayern insist they’re behind Tuchel for the time being.

Yet with the 50-year-old failing to coax the best from his players, and falling out with a few along the way, the prospect of Mourinho coming in as a replacement can’t be ruled out.
