Gary Lineker risks wrath of BBC bosses as he wades into Suella Braverman sacking row

Gary Lineker has taken to social media to share a sarcastic jibe aimed at the now-former Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

On Monday morning, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak relieved Braverman of her role as Home Secretary amid backlash for her unauthorised Op-Ed in which she accused the Met Police of “playing favourites” when it comes to policing protests.

Critics accused her of stoking the flames of the violent scenes which unfolded in London on Armistice Day over the weekend, while her supporters have backed her claims with allies within the party expected to rebel against the prime minister’s decision.

James Cleverly will now assume the position of Home Sec in a reshuffle which also saw the return of David Cameron to mainstream politics as Foreign Sec and Environment Secretary Therese Coffey deciding to step down.

Lineker’s take on the reshuffle and Braverman’s departure came on the social media site X, formerly Twitter, where he reposted one of the MP’s tweets from yesterday.

In Braverman’s tweet, she took aim the ongoing protests which have taken place on London’s street as she penned: “This can’t go on.

“Week by week, the streets of London are being polluted by hate, violence, and antisemitism.

“Members of the public are being mobbed and intimidated. Jewish people in particular feel threatened. Further action is necessary.”

Deciding to mock Braverman for her use of words, Lineker tweeted alongside the post: “No, it can’t go on,” followed by a wave emoji.

Lineker’s post sparked a number of outraged X users to express their disapproval with his take on the matter, especially in light of the BBC’s new social media guidelines for the presenters of its “flagship shows”.

“Sometimes she’s spoken in a way that others are a bit squeamish about, but that’s not really the point. The point is that as Home Secretary, she was committed to delivering something that the country thinks is important.

“I think from the point of view of the Conservatives winning the next election, today is a mistake because Suella understood what the British voter thought and was trying to do something about it.

“It seems to me that the Prime Minister is not as well attuned to the voters’ concerns as Suella Braverman. Suella was a serious contender last year when Boris went, she did much better than people had expected.

“She is a formidable politician and importantly, she has her finger on what people think, she is not somebody who has been absorbed by the blob.”
