Freddie Flintoff ‘excited’ as he announces huge career move following Top Gear crash with Northern Superchargers

Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff is returning to the spotlight in a new role that’s worlds away from his stint as Top Gear front-man.

The former cricketer is returning to his roots and has landed the job as head coach of a The Hundred outfit.

Flintoff has taken over from former England wicketkeeper James Foster as the new head coach of Northern Superchargers – almost one year on from his Top Gear crash.

The incident left Flintoff with life-threatening injuries and facial scars as he continues his recovery to this day.

Upon bagging the role as head coach, Flintoff avoided any mention of his future on the BBC motoring show, which has been the centre of axe speculation ever since the incident.

Instead, Flintoff said: “I am excited to have been appointed Head Coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team.

“My time with the England Men’s team has been a reminder of just how special cricket is to me, and I’m relishing the opportunity to be back amongst it, helping to guide the Superchargers team to success on the field while making memories off it and helping to take cricket to more people.

“The Superchargers have a great fan base who I cannot wait to meet and bring along with us this season.

“I’m looking forward to making Headingley my new home,” Flintoff concluded in the statement.

Flintoff will be hoping to improve the luck of the Northern Superchargers after the team finished at the foot of the table in 2023.

Top Gear co-star Chris Harris recently spoke out about the impact the crash on him and the show as a whole, admitting he went to a “dark place” after filming was halted.

When asked how Flintoff was doing on BBC Breakfast earlier this month, Harris replied: “I think he’s healing, you know. It was a serious incident, I’m not going to say more than that.

“As long as he’s healing, it’s great to see him out and about and being passionate about doing cricket.

“I’m sad I’m not doing Top Gear at the moment but that’s life. It’s the best thing for him right now.”
