Expats: The best cities for UK expats to move to shared with two European countries dominating list

The study looked at locations worldwide to find which has the highest quality of life for expats.

The top 10 places to move to were all in Europe, with two countries in particular dominating the list.


This looked at factors including health services, housing, access to a social network and recreational and leisure facilities.

Infrastructure, climate, personal safety and socio-political tensions were also considered in ECA’s Location Rating Report.

Basel, Switzerland

Bern in Switzerland came up top, with expats who move there expected to have the best quality of life.

Two other Swiss spots – Geneva and Basel – also ranked in the top 10.

However it was the Netherlands which was shown overall to be the best country for expats.

Nearly half (four out of 10) of the best areas to live can be found in the Netherlands.

Eindhoven was second overall and the highest-ranking Netherlands spot.

It can be found in south Netherlands and is considered a technology and design hub, giving good work opportunities for expats.

This comes as an expat who moved to the UK spoke of the benefits of living in the country.

He said people want to move to the “beautiful” country compared to moving to Europe.
