Spain is a very popular holiday destination among Britons – and it’s easy to understand why. Tourists can enjoy around 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, delicious cuisine, buzzing nightlife and incredible landscapes – all just a short flight away.
An expat living in Spain shared his “number one spot to visit” in the beautiful country. He urged people to head to the “unmissable” city of Cádiz.
James Blick, a New Zealander living in Madrid, is one half of YouTube’s Spain Revealed. He is joined by his Spanish partner Yolanda (Yoly) Martin, and together they share their insights about Spain.
The pair aimed to take visitors “off the beaten path” with their recommendations. They hoped to give travellers an insight into places outside of busy tourist spots Barcelona, Madrid and Grenada.

James and Yoly’s “number one place to visit in Spain” is Cádiz – the city, not the region.
James said that this is the best their “hearts reside”. He said that it’s a place that’s “filled with wonderful food and wonderful history”.
He said: “It’s just such a humble, friendly, beautiful city just out there on the Atlantic.
“Its very unique position has been so important to its history, and the colour of the place – if you go close up to the buildings you can see oyster shells in the stone because of the rock that has been used.”
It’s a wonderful city for those who enjoy a walk, as you can stroll around the whole of Cádiz.
There’s plenty to see and the city provides a real sensory experience. James told visitors to note the “egg-shell blue sea”, “colourful plants”, “wonderful buildings” and “massive fortresses” from a time when Cádiz was an important defense position for the country. He called it a “magical” place.
Yoly added that Cádiz was “one of the birthplaces of Flamenco”, meaning it’s a fantastic place to experience the art form.
Britons looking to taste some delicious cuisine in Spain can try chicharrón (pork belly strips) and tortillitas de camarones (shrimp fritters) which are popular in the city.
For Britons who have visited the beautiful city of Havana, Cuba, Cádiz has a very similar look and feel.
Holidaymakers who visit Cádiz should take a trip to the Torre Tavira, a watch tower from the 18th century, located downtown and at the highest point of the city.
