Before making the big decision to move abroad, people need to consider several things such as moving costs and location.
An expat in Spain has shared her experience of moving overseas and highlighted three things people need to focus on.
Expat in Spain, Mari, from the YouTube channel Mari in Spain,said that is imperative for people to do their research before moving to Spain, in particular the cost of living.
She said: “Although generally, cost of living is much lower in Spain than compared to the UK, it still differs by region.”

She added that bigger cities will be more expensive but people need to do their research for smaller cities and towns.
Mari said: “Websites like Numbeo and Expatistan will be a great help. They compare for you basic categories like: food, housing, clothes, transportation, personal care and entertainment.
“I would recommend creating a detailed budget, which would include rent, utilities, groceries and transportation.”
Whilst there are apps that can help people make a lengthy budget, the expat recommended the old-fashioned way of jotting all your bits down.
Mari advised to try and learn the basics of Spanish too as it will go a long way with the locals.
She explained: “You will find way more empathy, support and help from Spanish people if you try to speak with them. Even though some Spaniards speak English especially in medium-sized and big cities, knowing Spanish will let you integrate into local culture more.
“Although locals treat expats and foreigners well, lately I have noticed that Spanish people are getting tired. Not only from ignorant tourists but also from expats who don’t want to integrate with Spanish.”
The expat recommended using mobile apps to learn the basics of Spanish or seek private tuition from an expert.

“Apps like Duolingo, Babbel and Rosetta Stone can be helpful. Try to practice Spanish bit by bit every day by talking to locals and watching Spanish TV, podcasts or music,” said Mari.
The third tip Mari advised is to choose a neighbourhood that fits your lifestyle and budget.
“Explore neighbourhoods online by just walking on Google Maps and once you’re here, go and look around,” Mari said.
“Although Spain is considered to be a safe country, check the crime rate of each city. I was using a website called Hoodmaps to see what areas are most expensive, less safe or more touristic,” said the expat.
