GB News host Ellie Costello has revealed that some viewers slammed her as “pathetic” because she was scared of the thunderstorms this morning.

Yesterday The Met Office issued an urgent weather warning, with motorists warned of difficult driving conditions and London was hit with the thunderstorms overnight.

Ellie admitted that the storms frightened her on her commute into work and co-host Stephen Dixon agreed.

Speaking on Breakfast Ellie said: “We’ve been talking about the weather this morning, haven’t we? I think lots of people are calling me very pathetic for saying that it was scary.”

Stephen said: “One or two people are saying you need to get a grip. But I said it was scary first and foremost because I mean, driving through it, it really was.”

Ellie added: “Bearing in mind we’re driving in at about three in the morning, so we are the only people on the road.” Stephen said: “It was really, really scary.”

Weather journalist Nathan Rao said: “That was quite scary. I was scared as well this morning when I left. If you’re waking up this morning, you are going to be waking to some bangs and clatters.

“Because we have thunderstorms across the south of the country. If you take South Wales and the South of the Midlands all the way downwards, the Southeast, the Southwest, the West Country, Wales, Kent, Sussex, Essex, all of that area is under a yellow Met Office warning for thunderstorms this morning, the south-east up until ten am.

“There are some pretty lively eruptions going on. I was looking at the lightning trackers this morning.

“Around 540 lightning strikes an hour when I was heading in this morning. So it’s going to be a very, very explosive morning up until about 10 as those thunderstorms roll in from Normandy in France on an area of low pressure.”

The UK was hit with thunderstorms last night

Looking ahead to the week ahead, Britain is set to see some sunny weather, with temperatures set to rise.

Meteorologist for British Weather Services and social commentator, Jim Dale told GB News: “The next week or so is likely to bring the warmest day of the year so far, and we are going to see a change from the current cold as we lose the northerly drag.

“There are going to be fronts coming through, so it is not completely settled everywhere, but there will be a change from the dominant low pressure we have seen now for months.”

It will wrap up an unusually chilly end to April which saw the mercury in parts of Scotland dip below freezing.

Forecasters were even mooting the risk of snow over the northern mountains at the weekend as the region shivered under winter frosts.

It follows an unusually choppy storm season which has seen 11 named storms –the latest Kathleen at the start of April – swipe the UK since September.
