Cristiano Ronaldo provides update on football future after rumours of ’99 lashings’ debunked

Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed he’s only thinking about the short term as the end of his time as a footballer creeps closer.

The 38-year-old currently has no plans to retire from the sport, having signed for Al-Nassr last winter following his bitter departure from Manchester United.

Ronaldo has been outstanding for the Saudi Pro League team this season, scoring 10 goals from eight league games.

And he’s been in fine form for Portugal, too, netting twice as they beat Slovakia 3-2 on Friday night.

Ronaldo has now been asked about what the future holds, having won practically every trophy during his time in the sport.

And the Al-Nassr star responded by saying he wasn’t looking too far ahead.

“Things have happened in my life, both on a personal and professional level, that make me think more in the short term nowadays,” he said.

“People say I’m going to play on until I’m 40 or 41 years old.

“I don’t set these targets. It’s a question of just enjoying the moment, which is a good moment.

“I feel good. My body is responding to how I’ve treated it over the years.

“I’m happy both at my club and in the Selecao.

“I’ve scored plenty of goals, I feel in good shape physically. It’s a question of enjoying the moment.”

Ronaldo was speaking after rumours claiming he was facing 99 lashes in Iran were debunked.

On Friday, Iranian media claimed the Portugal international was facing the punishment for ‘adultery’.

Ronaldo had met a paralysed panter named Fatemeh Hamimi while visiting the country last month.

The footballer posed for a picture with Hamimi, while video footage showed him giving her a hug and a kiss on the head.

Such crimes can be punishable out in the Middle East. Touching a woman who isn’t your wife is, in their laws, the equivalent to adultery.

It was even said Ronaldo had already been sentenced for his gesture of kindness towards Hamimi.

Since then, however, those rumours have been debunked with the Iranian embassy in Madrid putting them to bed.

“We strongly deny the issuance of any sentence against any international athlete in Iran,” a statement read.

“It is of concern that the publication of such ill-founded news could cast a shadow over crimes against humanity and war crimes against the oppressed Palestinian nation.

“It should be noted that Cristiano Ronaldo travelled to Iran on September 18 and 19 to play in an official soccer match and was very well received by the people and the authorities.

“His sincere and humane meeting with Fatemeh Hamami was also praised and admired by both the people and the country’s sports authorities.”

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has also said he’d love to score 1,000 goals by the time he’s retired.

The veteran has netted 857 times so far.

And Ronaldo said: “It will be quite difficult [to score 1,000 goals] , but it’s about my mindset and my motivation.

“If, physically, my legs treat me as well as I treat them… We’ll see, these are small steps.

“To get to 1,000, you first have to get to 900.

“I think I will get there.”
