Coleen Rooney has revealed her son Kai faces abuse from opponents due to his famous footballing father Wayne.
The 15-year-old Manchester United youth academy player has been targeted with verbal taunts during matches, his mother disclosed on the Stick to Football podcast.
“It doesn’t happen to him very often, but it did then, and you can see in some games where they give you a little push,” she said.
Despite the challenges of having a legendary father, Kai appears to be following in Wayne’s footsteps at Old Trafford, where he joined the academy in 2020.

The young Rooney has already shown impressive talent in United’s youth setup, scoring 56 goals in his first full season.

Born in 2009, when Wayne was at the height of his career with Manchester United, Kai is aiming to follow his father’s remarkable legacy.

Coleen shared a specific incident highlighting the abuse Kai has faced during matches.
“A few years ago, I remember my son Kai took a penalty at St Georges Park, where we were for a tournament,” she recalled.

The incident turned sour when Kai missed the crucial spot-kick.
“It went to penalties, Kai stepped up and just skied it. Afterwards I asked him how he could take a penalty like that, and he told me he was just fuming as the goalkeeper was saying ‘Your dad’s s***’, and he got dead angry,” Coleen explained.
She noted that Kai is “strong-minded though and usually shrugs it off.”
