Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has destroyed his players after their shambolic 4-1 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

Alexander Isak and Raheem Sterling exchanged early blows before goals from Jamal Lascelles and Joelington turned the game around.

Chelsea saw Reece James sent off as their day on Tyneside went from bad to worse.

And Anthony Gordon struck in the closing stages to make the result safe and boost Newcastle’s chances of finishing in the top four.

“It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands,” he told Premier League Productions.

“We cannot complain about the result, we did not read the game from the beginning.

“We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy.

“Even after we scored, at 1-1, it was a chance for us to force them to play deep, but it was so easy for Newcastle.

“That is why I am so upset with the performance.

“It is a young team, they need this type of situation to realise.

“We will go to the hotel, then train early tomorrow, no time off.

“We cannot blame the players, it is the team together.

“We need to understand the level we need to compete, and learn about this situation.

“There are many details, many things that build confidence and strength.

“We already know what is going on, and we will try to change the dynamic.”

While it was a dire day for Chelsea, it was yet another performance to remember from Eddie Howe’s side.

Newcastle had been plagued with injury issues prior to the contest, with many expecting them to struggle.

But Howe’s high-flying side were ruthless and deservedly claimed all three points.

Reacting to the result, Howe hailed the way his team performed and singled out youngster Lewis Miley for praise.

“It was a real statement of character within the squad,” the 45-year-old said.

“We really asked the players to step up, and we really deserved to win. Big positives from today.

“The leaders within the group set the tone – Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Matt Ritchie. They make sure we don’t surrender.”

On Miley, he continued: “The biggest compliment I can give him is the pass for the first goal – an incredible decision, and he has the right temperament.

“A lot of young players would have wanted to shoot there. We have high hopes for him.

“If you are disjointed and go away from your principles, you will be in trouble. We try to be us.”

Newcastle won’t have too long to dwell on the successful result, however.

They’re scheduled to face Paris Saint-Germain in their crunch Champions League clash on Tuesday night (8pm).

Chelsea, meanwhile, are next in action against Brighton on Sunday (2pm).

Roberto De Zerbi’s side will go into that match on a high after a narrow 3-2 victory over Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
