Burt before visiting the Middle Eastern country, it’s important to consult the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO’s) latest guidance. Britons have been issued a fresh warning about the risk of counterfeit alcohol.
The FCDO stated: “People have died or suffered serious illness in Istanbul, Turkey after drinking illegally produced local spirits and counterfeit bottles of branded alcohol.”
Tourists have been advised to take specific precautions to ensure their safety:
- Buy alcoholic beverages only from licensed liquor stores
- Buy drinks only at licensed bars and hotels
- Avoid home-made alcoholic drinks
- Check bottle seals are intact
- Check labels for poor print quality or incorrect spelling

Holidaymakers were told: “If you have any concerns, ask for advice from your tour operator or the Turkish authorities.
“Seek urgent medical attention if you or someone you are travelling with falls ill after drinking alcohol.”
The FCDO has a list of medical facilities in Turkey to assist British nationals who may need support.
Before visiting Turkey, it’s important to consult the FCDO’s latest travel guidance.
This will include the necessary information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks, health and getting help.
Those planning a visit should heed Government advice on specific areas with regional risks, including the Turkey-Syria border, Hakkari province, south-east Turkey and Mount Ararat, eastern Turkey. Britons should also be aware of regional escalation.
Britons in Turkey were recently issued a new money warning as tourists are urged not to accept two banknotes.
This comes as the country sees a reported surge in counterfeit $50 and $100 bills.

The FCDO stated: “Banks and money exchanges may not accept $50 or $100 US dollar bills, due to a reported surge in counterfeit banknotes of these denominations in Turkey.” Holidaymakers were advised to carry smaller US dollar denominations or use alternative payment methods.
Before going abroad, Britons are advised to consult the FCDO’s guidance on their chosen destination to ensure a safe, well-informed trip.
Britons were recently alerted to a European hotspot’s new entry requirements, with visitors warned they could incur an “on-the-spot fine” if they overstay the visa-free limit.
