Britons planning a visit to Chile have been issued a warning about the risk of terrorism in the South American country.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warned that terrorist attacks “cannot be ruled out,” with specific concerns about groups claiming to represent the interests of indigenous communities.
These groups have been carrying out attacks in multiple regions of the country, prompting the FCDO to issue specific guidance for British nationals.
The attacks have been concentrated in three specific regions of Chile: Araucanía, Biobío and Los Ríos.

State actors and businesses operating in these regions are being primarily targeted by these groups.
The FCDO’s warning specifically addressed the geographical spread of the threat, highlighting these regions as areas of particular concern.
The FCDO advised British nationals to “exercise caution and follow the instructions of local authorities”.
The travel advisory also highlighted specific concerns about anarchist groups operating in the Santiago Metropolitan region.
These groups primarily focus on causing property damage through their attacks.
British nationals were advised to keep bags with them at all times, as unattended bags may be treated with “suspicion” by local authorities.
The FCDO emphasised the importance of reporting any suspicious behaviour or unattended packages to local authorities.
Speaking about the terrorist threat more generally, the FCDO stated that groups and individuals specifically view the UK and British nationals as targets.
“Stay aware of your surroundings at all times,” the FCDO stated, directing British nationals to UK Counter Terrorism Policing resources for guidance on reducing risks while abroad.
This comes as holidaymakers were warned that “terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Brazil”. Britons were advised to “exercise caution around major sites in large Brazilian cities”.
