Holidaymakers heading to Spain have been warned of extreme weather conditions.

They are being urged to take care or risk potentially serious heat related illness.

An update has been shared by the Spanish Meteorological Office, AEMET.

It has reported temperatures as high as 38ºC so far this month.

Travel warnings were issued for UK travel

Today, it has said there is a weather “risk” in regions across the country.

Holidaymakers should be particularly aware of the heat when in Grand Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro and Tenerife.

Temperatures could reach as high as 36ºC in some of these locations today.

The FCO has an ongoing warning for heat in Spain as this can cause a risk to health and also promote forest fires.

It said: “Forest fires occur frequently in Spain (including in the Spanish islands) during the summer months, when temperatures regularly reach over 40ºC.

“Be aware of your environment when visiting or driving through woodland areas.”

Hot weather can also bring on heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion or sunstroke.

This can be dangerous, particularly for people over 75, those on medication or those who have a serious or long-term illness.
