Britons in Greece warned of ‘violent’ risk in tourist spots

The UK Government has changed the latest advice for those planning a break in Greece.

A safety and security warning has been shared for those in popular spots.

Tourists have been warned to be vigilant across the country.

This is due to a potentially increased risk of political demonstrations that have been known to turn “violent” in some cases.

Greece has increased security in tourist spots

Greece has increased security in a number of areas tourists are likely to be in.

The FCO said: “Greek authorities have increased security at some prominent locations, including tourist sites, due to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

“Stay aware of your surroundings, stay away from demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities.”

There is a high risk of strikes which pose a security and safety risk, and also cause travel disruptions.

Such demonstrations can happen at short notice, according to FCO.

It stated: “There are regular strikes, sometimes called at short notice that can cause disruption to public transport (including air travel and ports), as well as road networks and borders.

“Political demonstrations can also occur frequently.”

It warned of security measures that can be used during demonstrations. Some of these could be damaging for those caught in the area.

“Avoid demonstrations wherever possible and follow the advice of the local authorities. Some demonstrations in the past have turned violent,” it said.

Tourists are urged to be vigilant

“If you do find yourself unexpectedly near a demonstration, move away to the last known safe place. Security forces often use tear gas to break up demonstrations, which can harm your breathing and vision.

“Demonstrations take place regularly around major squares in central Athens, in particular Syntagma Square. There is currently a heightened risk of demonstrations, particularly in central Athens, related to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

“Nationwide strikes and protests can occur at any time and may disrupt road, air, sea travel and cause delays or diversions at border crossings.”

This comes as holidaymakers in Croatia were given a travel warning as they face new checks.

Britons heading to Spain have been warned if visiting one of six regions.
