While staycations are very popular due to convenience and cost, many Britons like to jet away and explore new places further afield.

Those who are looking to escape the UK in 2024 might want to try a trip to Izmir, Turkey.

British Airways (BA) has announced it will launch a brand new route from London Heathrow to Izmir (ADB).

From May 2024, British holidaymakers will be able to travel to this terrific Turkish city that is steeped in history.

The travel experts at BA said: “Izmir is one of Turkey’s oldest cities with a fascinating past.”

Beachy but buzzing Izmir is the perfect destination for relaxation and “vibrant” nightlife.

History lovers will find themselves at home in Izmir, where “remnants of Roman and Greek history are everywhere, from well-preserved ruins to expansive archaeological sites”.

The travel enthusiasts advised: “Start your trip with a visit to the Agora of Smyrna, a piece of Roman history that’s become an open-air museum dedicated to Izmir’s fascinating past.”

In this European city there seems to be something for everyone, whether you’re there for relaxing, exploring, eating, or shopping.

The experts said: “Fly to Izmir with British Airways and meander through the winding streets of the ancient district of Konak to the iconic Clock Tower.

“If you want to explore further afield, you can visit the excavated remains of Ephesus, a city left over from Ancient Greece, or experience the tranquil vibes of Sirince, a village just outside Izmir.

“When you’ve had your fill of the region’s history, dive into the lively atmosphere of Alsancak, where modern cafes, shops, and cultural venues provide a glimpse into the city’s contemporary side.

“For something a bit different, visit the Buca Caves, an underground maze of impressive rock formations, or ride in the historic lift, known locally as Asansor, to experience panoramic views over the metropolis.

“You can also easily visit the nearby Cesme Peninsula and vibrant Kusadasi from Izmir if you want to relax on the Aegean’s blue water beaches and stay at all-inclusive resorts.”

Kemeralti Market

Head to the lively and eclectic Kemeralti Market and explore the antique shops, artisans’ workshops, coffee houses, places of worship, and eateries.

One visitor to the market told TripAdvisor: “You can find almost everything you need in this market, from jewellery to fish. Take your camera with you and be prepared to taste the delicious local food while you shop and take pictures.”

British Airways passengers will be able to book flights only or flights and a hotel on the official website.

While Turkey is an extremely popular tourist destination, there are some areas that Britons have been advised against visiting.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel within 10km of the border with Syria, against all but essential travel to Sirnak (city), and all but essential travel to Hakkari province.

For holidaymakers who fancy somewhere other than Turkey, British Airways has introduced a new route from London Gatwick to Agadir, Morocco, starting March 2024, and from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi, starting April 2024.

British Airways will now also fly from London Stansted for the first time in four years, with new routes to Spain and France.
