Heavy rain and violent thunderstorms are set to return next week following a short Bank Holiday reprieve with some areas expected to see highs of 23C.

The Met Office says dry spells are expected to be seen across all regions in the UK over the weekend, with sunny conditions forecast for Saturday.

Earlier this week, flooding caused chaos in several areas including the north of England.

Forecasters warned that the heavy downpours saw a month’s worth of rain fall in some regions.

Carlisle in Cumbria saw 88mm of rain in 48 hours – while the average for May is 55mm for the whole month.

Met Office meteorologist Amy Bokota said conditions will improve for the bank holiday weekend, but will become “unsettled” on Monday.

She said: “The low pressure is expected to east away on Friday. It will be a touch cooler than the last couple days and parts of the northeast and Scotland will see showers. On the whole, it is an improved picture.

“Things will improve as we head into Saturday morning. Wind will ease and it will be a pretty good day across the board.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

“Scotland will see a few showers but the bulk of the UK will see brighter spells. The best will be 22-23C across the south of England and London.”

She added: “It will stay unsettled through Bank Holiday Monday. There will be further showers in parts of Scotland, the north east of England and Northern Ireland.

“The best weather will be in the very far south west of the UK and southern England. Elsewhere will see heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms. It will then stay quite unsettled into the next week.”

Weather maps show low pressure moving across Scotland and northern England on Sunday from 4pm with some thunderstorms likely.

Most parts of Britain will see light rain throughout Sunday afternoon and into Monday.

Heavy rain is expected to strike early on Tuesday morning before easing off by 7pm.

The Met Office said: “Rain pushing northeast on Sunday, with heavy thundery showers for some. Heavy showers in the northeast on Monday, but drier in the southwest. Remaining unsettled into Tuesday.”
