The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for wind and rain as Storm Nelson is set to provoke havoc across Britain.

A warning for high winds remains in place along the south coast until 11.50pm this evening as gusts of up to 70mph are expected to hit.

Another weather warning has been issued for heavy rain across Northern Ireland until 3am tomorrow.

Storm Nelson is likely to bring heavy rain and coastal gales on Thursday and into Good Friday.

Forecasters say gusts could reach 70mph, while there is also a risk of hail and thunder.

The Met Office said the storm could lead to some “hazardous conditions”.

A spokesperson said: “There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.”

The agency added: “Strong winds and large coastal waves may lead to hazardous conditions.”

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The latest weather maps show the low pressure system sweeping in later today.

Storm Nelson – named by Spanish weather service Aemet – is set to bring an Easter washout in Spain and Portugal.

Unsettled conditions are expected to continue over the Easter weekend with a mix of showers, high winds and some sunny spells.

Easter Sunday is looking set to be the “best day of the week”.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “The unsettled weather will continue on Good Friday, with low pressure continuing to feed showers and longer spells of rain across the UK, although drier spells will develop later in the day from the east.

“Saturday sees a continuation of this showery theme in southern and western areas, though there is an increasing chance of brighter spells further north and east.

“Sunday looks to be the best day of the week; however, conditions will return to more unsettled from the south later Sunday and into Monday.”
