Boxing news: Tyson Fury’s father condemned for comments about star as major worry raised

Tyson Fury’s father has been criticised after saying his son should change his style for his upcoming bout with Oleksandr Usyk.

The Gypsy King is a man under scrutiny after struggling during his recent victory over Francis Ngannou.

Fury was knocked to the floor in round three of that showdown, which took place in Saudi Arabia at the end of last month.

Though he won via split decision, the 35-year-old has been criticised for underwhelming against an opponent who was making his debut in the sport.

Among those to take aim at Fury was his own father, John, who said his style wasn’t good enough.

“The style I am seeing is no good,” he recently said.

“The style Tyson has right now, he wouldn’t have beaten Wladimir Klitschko with that.

“Oleksandr Usyk is a tricky man. The style he’s got now won’t do the trick.”

Now, former boxing champion Barry McGuigan has addressed John’s comments.

Speaking to Seconds Out, he criticised John’s outburst and insists Fury is unable to change styles at this current point in his career.

“Why would his father say that?” he stated.

“He can’t change styles. Tyson is tall, rangy, fast hands, good fighter.

“Chin is suspect as we saw with Francis Ngannou.

“Because of the performance against Ngannou, this fight [with Usyk] is a much harder fight.”

McGuigan then proceeded to raise a worry about Fury, saying he’s concerned about whether the Briton’s chin is strong enough to resist powerful punches.

Addressing the upcoming duel with Usyk, he added: “Usyk is quick, fast, low centre of gravity which is difficult for a tall guy.

“Of course, his performances are starting to level off, he’s on the decline, he’s not body beautiful, he never has been.

“He’s got quick hands but his chin, I’m worried about his chin.

“Usyk is exceptional, he could win, that wouldn’t at all surprise me.”

Meanwhile, Fury’s father also recently stated that he’d noticed a ‘decline’ in his son – despite the Gypsy King remaining unbeaten.

Speaking before a new date was pencilled in for the lucrative Saudi showdown, John said: “In my opinion, Tyson needs a bit more time to get his conditioning right and his weight right.

“For my money, his last three fights, I have seen a bit of decline.

“Not a decline in ability but a decline in strength, power and physical condition.

“I don’t know what they are doing up there, you have to address it. He didn’t look himself out in Saudi.

“He didn’t look right, everything had changed about him, his demeanour, his body.

“I was puzzled. He said he had been training but there is training and there is training.

“If you’re going at your own pace no one is going to tell you otherwise, no one is going to offend you or kick you up the backside.

“No one can teach Tyson how to box, or teach him more than he knows.

“All they can do is put some muscle on there and make his body rock solid.

“For my money he looked fat-thin, he should have been better, a bit heavier with a lot more muscle.

“Tyson is a mammoth fella. He needs to power up in the body department and the only way you do that is a proper course and they take time and we don’t have the time.”
