Michael Mosley’s staggering career is set to be celebrated with a two-programme special to pay tribute to the TV doctor following his tragic death.

The documentary – titled The Doctor Who Changed Britain – will air on June 14 at 8pm on BBC One and will take a look at his almost four decades of broadcasting.

It will explore how he how he transformed people’s lives and was an executive producer following him working on the shows Pompeii – The Last Day; Krakatoa Revealed; Life Before Birth, and Supervolcano.

The BBC said of the programme: “His programmes have made a lasting impact on the nation’s health habits from intermittent fasting to the benefits of a cold shower.

“Michael also shared his own struggles with audiences worldwide; as a chronic insomniac he made programmes about sleep and, ever curious, he would also go to extremes in the pursuit of science, even infecting himself with a tapeworm.

“Celebrating Michael’s career, this programme marks the enormous impact he made, touching the lives of so many.”

The documentary will be introduced and narrated by friend and fellow TV doctor Chris van Tulleken, who Mosley worked with as part of Trust Me, I’m A Doctor.

Tulleken recently paid tribute to his longtime friend and told The One Show hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas: “I think anyone who watched Michael would know that he was kind and generous on screen but when he was not on screen that was exactly who he was as well.”

Mosley vanished during a walk on the island last Wednesday before wife Clare raised the alarm and a huge search followed, with his body being found next to a fence four days later.

It was recently confirmed he died of natural causes and is now thought Mosley had chosen to lie down with his legs raised on a rock, which the NHS advises to prevent fainting and potentially falling.

On Monday, a bar close to the area is said to have captured Mosley’s fall as he navigated a treacherous incline, sadly being out of the camera range. The footage has been seen by PA and local journalists in Greece.

Mosley’s wife issues a heartbreaking statement just hours after his death was confirmed which read: “I don’t know quite where to begin with this. It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband.

“We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together.

“I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and their support over the past days.

“My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world. It’s clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you.

“We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team.

“We’re also very grateful to the press who have dealt with us with great respect. I feel so lucky to have our children and my amazing friends. Most of all, I feel so lucky to have had this life with Michael.”
