BBC presenter rushed to hospital after ‘wake up call’ during Wimbledon

Television presenter Qasa Alom has disclosed that he was taken to hospital by ambulance following a health crisis that began while he was presenting the BBC’s tennis coverage.

The broadcaster took to Instagram to share details of his medical emergency, which occurred during the middle of the Wimbledon Championships.

Qasa Alom took to social media to reveal his health scare

The presenter admitted that his decision to delay seeking professional medical attention caused the situation to worsen significantly.

“I can’t say the last few weeks have been easy,” Alom stated in his Instagram post.

“Ever since the middle of Wimbledon I’ve been battling my body with a health issue,” he wrote, adding that he “put off getting proper medical care because I just did not want to miss The Championships.”

“Eventually it became too much & escalated,” Alom revealed.

The BBC presenter opened up about needing to “respect his body”

Alom urged others to heed their physical limits, writing: “Respect your body and its limitations. We only have one.”

He expressed appreciation for his support network during his ordeal. “Grateful to my family for helping me through a difficult period & now the road to recovery,” the presenter wrote, accompanying his message with photographs from his hospital stay and ambulance journey.

The Birmingham-born broadcaster began his media career with the BBC in 2010, initially working in local radio.

His investigative journalism earned recognition when he received a Frank Gillard Award for his Radio 4 report examining the illegal sex industry in Stoke-on-Trent.

His television career progressed rapidly following his 2016 debut on BBC One. The following year, he directed a film for the broadcaster.

Recognition for his broadcasting excellence came in 2020 when he secured the Radio Presenter of the Year accolade at the Asian Media Awards, honouring his contributions to BBC Asian Network.

Major sporting assignments followed, including coverage of The Boat Race and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in his native Birmingham.

In 2023, Alom assumed one of the BBC’s most prestigious sports presenting roles, succeeding Clare Balding as the host of the corporation’s daily Wimbledon highlights programme.
