MasterChef fans were left annoyed by John Torode and Gregg Wallace on Wednesday night as they claimed they were “inconsistent” with their comments.

The 20th series will see 58 passionate and talented hopefuls from all walks of life, such as a farmer, archaeologist and musical editor – all eager for this year’s MasterChef Champion title.

Tonight, the contestants were tasked with elevating an everyday ingredient in the new Basic and Brilliant challenge before they are given a trout to fillet, cook and serve in the most exotic way possible.

The two who made it through joined those who were successful from the first round to make a two-course menu for three past MasterChef Champions.

However, after the first challenge, many fans of the show were left annoyed at Wallace and Torode’s comments towards the contestants dishes.

Many slammed Jerome over not listening to the task properly and others noted how Peter burnt his basic ingredient which had to be scrapped.

Taking to their X account, one noted: “Ooh trout on #MasterChef. I should be there judging at this rate.”

“John Torode going Boooooom. Absolute b******s if I was served that in a restaurant I’d ask if their ovens were working,” another fumed.

Another asked “How is pickling radishes showing skill? Just water and vinegar isn’t it? Getting silly now.”

“I do not ever believe that John Torode & Gregg Wallace are ever in the same studio at the same time when they are giving the contestants their feedback,” a fourth noted.

One confused watcher said: “Honestly I don’t know how some of these contestants get onto this programme.” (sic)

Torode said: “I can hardly believe that we are into the 20th series of this unbelievably brilliant show. It’s such a point of pride and celebration.

“I believe food brings people together and every year we’re fortunate enough to be able to help incredibly talented, hard-working people realise their dream and indulge themselves in the joy that is MasterChef.”

Wallace added: “This is when the wave of ambition hits the rock of reality for these amateur cooks – and we are putting them through the most extraordinary challenges we’ve ever seen.

“This show means business and we’re so lucky to be able to see the level of cooking inch higher and higher each year.

“John and I are so happy to be part of a wonderful MasterChef community and, each series, welcome new ambitious cooks to show us what they can do.

“2024 will be a celebration of the talent emerging from the country’s home kitchens – this year and from our time on MasterChef so far – I cannot wait.”
