Death in Paradise star Danny John-Jules, who plays Officer Dwayne Myers, opened up about the annoying habit he has which often leaves his co-stars in a mood with him.

During the Christmas special Don Gilet will make his debut on the BBC drama for its Christmas Special as Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson.

Viewers of the BBC crime drama said goodbye to long-running DI Neville Parker (played by Ralf Little), with the character being involved in the series for five years.

Earlier this year, Gilet was announced as the new lead actor and said of his role: “Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands.

“This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it. It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humbled and dedicated.

“Even during those testing times when every sinew is screaming at me to run off the set and dive into the sea, swimming pool or an ice-cold beer – whichever happens to be closer at the time!”

However, whilst fans are excited to see Gilet take on the role and solve the mysteries of the Isle of Saint Marie, many are also looking forward to the return of Jules and his role as Dwayne Myers.

Ahead of his return, John-Jules revealed the one thing that annoyed his co-stars when he arrived on set seven years ago.

He expressed: “It’s pretty much like walking out your front door for me. I first went there fourteen years ago, and I filmed seven series. After seven years, it was pretty much like being at home.

“I used to annoy everyone because I could speak the local language. The mayor went crazy because when she first spoke to me, I was speaking in English.

“So she couldn’t understand how I was born in England but could speak Creole. She nearly fell over!

During the Christmas special, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) is relieved to discover that a British detective is holidaying on the island after pressure to find a new DI began to build.

As Wilson (Gilet) is about to board a flight back home to London ready to take off,he is informed by his boss that he needs to stay on Saint Marie – whether he likes it or not.

He is soon thrown into the deep end following the report of a second Santa shooting, this time that of celebrity songwriter Tony Hurst (Steven Hartley).

Eager to get the case cracked and go home, Wilson’s disinterest in making pleasantries with DS Naomi Thomas (Shantol Jackson) and Officer Darlene Curtis (Ginny Holder) does not go unnoticed.

On learning each Santa was seemingly shot with the exact same gun at the exact same time, the team must link three apparently unconnected victims and try to solve an impossible case.

Elsewhere, Officer Myers (John-Jules) is looking forward to a Christmas fishing trip with his father, Nelson (Ram John Holder), when a phone call out of the blue changes everything.

When asked what it was like to be working with Ram John Holder again, John-Jules added: “I first worked with Ram John Holder in 1985 in a musical at the Donmar Warehouse.

“He’d always been a big inspiration of mine. He’s an actor, singer… He’s just one of those guys.

“And he’s 90?! It’s like getting to work with Laurence Olivier.”
