The UK has everything you could want from a holiday, from camping and walking routes to beaches and city breaks.

While staycation prices have crept up in recent years, you don’t need to spend a lot to have a memorable holiday this year.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a travel expert suggested three northern holiday locations with lots of excursions you can enjoy “without parting with a penny”.

Places in the north of England and Scotland were among the recommendations from travel and tourism expert and marketing director at BCN Travel, Christian Petzold.

Scotland has a plethora of holiday options, including historical cities and natural landscapes. But if you can only pick one place based on affordability and beauty, Christian suggested the Highlands.

He said: “For outdoor-loving families or couples, the Highlands are unbeatable. You can pick up holiday parks and glamping pods for as little as £45 per night, and the main activities of hiking, wildlife spotting, and castles are free or very low cost.

“Inverness is a great base, and you have a number of self-catering options under £70 per night, so this is a very cheap break with stunning scenery.”

Knaresborough, North Yorkshire

For England, North Yorkshire is a particularly attractive option. Christian recommended two places in this region. Those looking for a quiet romantic getaway may want to consider Knaresborough, which also has cheap accommodation.

Christian explained: “This charming market town is perfect for couples’ weekend breaks. Couples can walk by the River Nidd, explore the castle ruins, and enjoy a riverside picnic without parting with a penny.

“Inns or Airbnbs are feasible from £55 per night. Day trips to Mother Shipton’s Cave and similar venues cost about £10 per head but offer a magical time for children.”

The second option is Richmond, where holidaymakers can get out in nature without breaking the bank.

The travel expert said: “A great alternative to the Lake District, Richmond is surrounded by countryside without the inflated cost. Families can explore waterfalls, ruins, and museums with extremely low entry fees.

“Family cottages and guesthouses are priced from around £65 to £85 per night, and there are plenty of picnic areas and nice walks perfect for budget entertainment.”
